God inhabits the PRAISES of His people

I can remember January 1st 2014. My sister and i had spent the day with our cousin and her family. Now, i what appears to be the blink of an eye, January 1st 2015 is less than a month away.

I haven't ticked off all the things on my "to be accomplished in 2014" list, but i have soooooooo much to be thankful for- even if it's to thank God for everyday this year that He has blessed me with life.

Life means there is hope. It means i can still accomplish great things - we can still accomplish great things.

So i wanna

Traffic of Life

This is so irritating, I thought to myself as I sped the short distance to the gate. I honked the horn about 3 times then got out of the car to open the gate myself. I’ll have to have a word with him when I get back home tonight, he knows I leave the house before 6.30am, he should be ready and waiting. I shouldn’t have to be the one to open the gate for myself I thought as I rushed back into the car. This little activity had set me back a minute, which equates to at least 10mins in Lagos traffic.

I was right. The express was blocked! What to do? What to do? What to do? I seemed to be all out of options, but I felt a leading to take the service lane, which looked even more

Apase wa ni pa ase re la fi da ohun gbogbo (The one who has authority to give orders, and by His orders have all things been created)

Where do I start?
Where do I begin?
What can I say, that will do your awesomeness justice?

I cried out.
You heard me - showed up even before the tears dried on my face.

It was no match for You.
Even before You spoke, it trembled in awe of You.
You commanded.

Who has the final say?

I'm on a roll this morning! And no I’m not trying to bribe any one for my absence. I should actually have started with an apology/ explanation (which will come soon) however I feel its best I get the Word out before I grovel and beg for forgiveness.

So yesterday after work I went to church, for those who work in V.I and are trying to get to Oregun, you understand what a nightmare that can be. But alas, my awesome God got me there in good time and no it wasn't because I was bombarding Him with "Lord please get me there in time" prayers. Ok well maybe it was. Sha, sha whatever the reason was, I got to the car park 30 mins into the start of the programme.

However, just as I pulled in, a bus was pulling out (the actual church is a bit of a walk from the car park we use, so the church provides buses to transport us there).

Anyhoo, I parked, and made my way to the queue to wait for the next bus, which thank God pulled in less than 5 or so mins after the one I missed. I was glad when we boarded the bus, a feeling which quickly disappeared once the driver got out- there were only about 6-7 of us on the bus, so he had to wait for more people (that hadn’t even arrived at the car park oh!!!) or the next bus to arrive. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw another bus by the gate, surely now we can go. But the driver of our bus didn't seem to be making any moves. And 3mins later I knew why- none of the cars outside had moved. The traffic was so bad that this second bus couldn't even turn into the compound because the car blocking the gate hadn't moved in ages.

That was when I decided to walk. I hopped out of the bus and hurriedly made my way to church. I tell you now, I wasn't prepared for what I saw when I got to the road. The bus that pulled out when I was just getting to the car park was maybe only 5 meters from the gate! Yes! The traffic was that bad!!

I over took the bus. The bus that I so desperately wanted to get on probably got to church 10 mins after I did!

What's the moral of this story? Well ....Proverbs 14:12-13 There's a way of life that looks harmless enough; look again (with your spiritual eyes- emphasis mine)—it leads straight to hell. Sure, those people appear to be having a good time, but all that laughter will end in heartbreak.

And no! I am not saying the people on that bus were going to hell, but that sometimes we see what's happening to others and we get jealous. We may have prayed for ages and all the things we've prayed about seem to be happening to everyone else, while we are 10 kg lighter due to the fast that we always seem to be doing. BUT! Oh yes, that blessed but! We serve a God who is able to compress years into months. That bus left the stop before I did, and under normal circumstances was maybe 7 mins ahead of me, yet I overtook it by walking! Imagine! My feet overtook a bus!!!

I’m still in awe of He who is able to do exceedingly more than I can ever ask or think. He indeed has the final say. Hallelujah.

May, gone so soon......

I do apologise for my long absence.... i have no excuse. Regardless of how busy i might have been i should have made time out to write.

May was a very special month for me. Yours truly got invited to speak/present at a fellowship! Yes oh! Lil'ol me! The fellowship had organised an outreach/ love feast and the fellowship leader invited me to be one of the speakers. I'm particularly glad because i got to share the experience with some of my closest and dearest....my brother, sister and a dear friend! Thank you guys for your moral support and feedback after - apparently my hand gestures were a bit distracting. Note to self- tone it down a bit a lot.

I’m especially grateful to God for providing me with the opportunity to share His word (my passion) with others. *Sigh* I can’t wait to do it again.

So that was the highlight of May for me. Till next time

Can 2 walk 2gether unless.....?

Here's an awesome devotional from the Word for Today that i just had to share. Read, enjoy and be blessed

E-V-A-L-U-A-T-E
Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?? Amos 3:3
A successful marriage is based on two things: 'finding' the right person, and 'becoming' the right person. And the second thing is harder than the first. Just because two people share the same bed and the same name, it doesn't guarantee harmony.

Here are some practical suggestions based on the word E-V-A-L-U-A-T-E:

Enjoy. Do you enjoy the same things? Maybe it's not a big deal now, but later when your husband is glued to the big match on TV and you want a little conversation, it will be.

Values. The Bible asks, 'Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?' Are you able to agree on major issues such as intimacy, parenting, finances, in-laws, goals, and your relationship with God? You may disagree over many things, but these are make-or-break issues.

Accessibility. Are you both emotionally accessible, or is he the strong silent type who doesn't communicate-or understand your need to?

Love. Do you really love each other? Not the Hollywood version but the kind that listens to your spouse's opinions and concerns, overlooks their faults and failings, values them, and expresses itself through kindness?

Understanding. As surely as God doesn't make two snowflakes alike, He doesn't make two people alike. So, can you understand and handle each other's differences?

Appreciation. Your partner can't read your mind, so get into the habit of expressing your appreciation for one another.

Temperament. If you're naturally upbeat but they're moody and introverted, you may have an oil-and-water mix. How will you handle this?

Environment. If you're from different backgrounds, are you comfortable in the same social and spiritual settings?

If you want a happy marriage, E-V-A-L-U-A-T-E these things.

MY Lord, my King, my Valentine, my Everything

I don’t remember the day I was born, but You do. I don’t remember my first birthday, but You do. I don’t remember what I wore the day I asked You to be my Everything, but You do. I don’t even remember the exact time I woke up yesterday, or how long it took me to get ready, but You do. I don’t know how many strands of hair I have on my head, but You do. I don’t know how much I weight right now, but You do.

I’m not perfect. Most times I knowingly disobey You because I’m fearful. More often than I should, I let unimportant things and people get in the way of us. I prioritise selfishly, putting my needs, my desires, and my wants before You.

You say, beautiful daughter of mine, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Look, I’ve written your names on the backs of my hands. The walls you’re rebuilding are never out of my sight. How can You love me? Perfect as You are, righteous in all Your ways, Sovereign God, perfect in all Your ways, right in all You do. Faithful when I am faithless. Unchanging when I am tossed about by this storm and that. You, who are merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. All have sinned and fall short of my glory, I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate you from My love in Christ Jesus. You remind me of the sacrifice of Your son, made while I was still drenched in sin. Your love is not a function of who I am or what I do, but on whom You are. You love me because You decided to, for You and not for me. Not because I am perfect, we both know I’m not. I am for you. Who can be against You?

Sometimes I get scared- things aren’t going the way they should, I get confused and don’t know what to say or do. I have not given you the spirit of fear, but of power love and a sound mind. Trust in me with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek My will in all you do, and I will show you which path to take. My Spirit is right alongside helping you along. If you don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does your praying in and for you, making prayer out of your wordless sighs, your aching groans. He knows you far better than you know yourself, knows your pregnant condition, and keeps you present before Me. That’s why you can be so sure that every detail in your life of love for God is worked into something good.

Thank You Lord for the sacrifice of Your only son. Thank You for this love of Yours that never, no not ever fails. Thank You for never ever leaving me. For taking me through the fire and the water, making me stronger, better and more like You with each passing day. Thank You for healing, for provision, protection, grace and mercy. You have seen me through so much; Your strength is constantly made perfect in my weakness. When I am hungry You feed me. Broken, you heal me. Lost, you gently bring me back to You. Confused, You direct me. There is none that compares with You, my Everything. You are the source of my strength, the strength of my life, the solid  rock on which I stand, the author and finisher of my faith, the pillar that hold this life of mine together. There is nothing I have that didn’t come from You. These hands of mine that You have blessed so much I lift in praise to You. Holy are You Lord almighty. Perfect is all that You do. Thank You for this constant, unshakeable love of Yours. There is nothing that compares to it; not even the comfort of bread (lol and You know I LOVE bread! You know EVERYTHING about me even things I don’t know).

You blow my mind with the songs You put on my lips. Your testimonies in my life leave me speechless. Who is there in heaven, on earth or even under it that dares compare with You? I know I’m not where You want me to be, but I’m not where I used to be either- and that’s all thanks to YOU. No one will share Your glory; take it ALL Lord.

We are on our way. Thank You, thank You, Thank You.....for EVERYTHING for this love of Yours that I can never get rid of, even if I wanted to (errr which I don’t oh).

So my Lord, my King, My Lover, my Valentine.....happy valentine to You oh Lover of my soul.

Love now and forever
The one You call precious

My Lord, My Valentine : Your love never gives up on me

No, not ever!

Never ever will You give up on me.  You see the potential in me. You see all that I can be. You don’t give up when I’m rigid and difficult to mould. Not even when I stubbornly turn away from You.

You are my biggest fan, having faith in me when I have none in myself. Where would I be without this persevering love of Yours. That doesn’t give up when it’s not returned, not even when I reek of sin, nor when I’m miles away from who/where I should be.

I can never escape from it, i can trust it because it’ll always be there- gently encouraging me to be all i can be and more. Oh much more.

It’s too amazing for words, this love of Yours.

Yours forever

My Lord, My Valentine : Your Love keeps no record of my wrongs

Lord, I’ve been bad. Remember all the things I’ve done, the things I’ve thought of doing? How can you love me after all that?

You smile, and pull me even closer into Your warm embrace, the harder I struggle to get away from You. You whisper o so gently “Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”

What manner of Love is this? That constantly starts on a clean slate, not remembering neither holding me to past sins and mistakes? You love me freely and trust me completely not letting my dirty past cloud a bright future.
It’s amazing how You truly do forget.

Yours lovingly

My Lord, My Valentine: Your Love does not demand it's own way with me

Ps 18: 30 “God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true.”

Everything about You is perfect. You know everything, yet You force nothing on us, even though Your ways are ALWAYS right. Free will; just one of the many evidences of Your love for us means You force nothing on no one, but instead patiently wait for us to see the error of our ways. For us to turn to You the one true God- greater than all, Sovereign God.

Your ways are perfect. More than perfect. You are perfect. More than perfect.
It is Your gentle love that transforms us, not forceful ways like that of the world, that transforms us to who You desire for us to be- for who you desire for me to be. Even when I suffer rejection in the hands of the world, when they say I’m not good enough, when they say it’s their way or the high way, I know all of me is accepted by You. It’s not Your way or the high way. This love of Yours is magical.

Yours forever

My Lord, My Valentine : Your Love is kind to me

Generous and considerate; what manner of love is this? Blessed beyond belief is what You’ve made me. You treat me independently of how i treat You. Testimony upon testimony has been my lot, even when i had no relationship with You.

Everything i am, everything i have is as a function of You. How can You show me so much kindness? Make my life a testimony of Your mercy and favour? You are so gracious, oh so gracious, treating me better than my actions deserve.
Your loving kindness is like no other. Nothing....no one compares.

Yours lovingly

My Lord, My Valentine : Your Love is Patient with me

You called me when I was 8, and like the little girl I was I ran into Your arms, no questions asked. You saw me through so much. But then I grew, not in wisdom, but in stupidity, and told myself I didn't need You, not by my words but through my actions. All that sin seemed like much more fun than time with You. Now, I can’t believe I chose this world over You, A world that hurt me time and time again, fed me so many lies and changed in so many ways. But You, the Rock of my salvation patiently waited for me to see the error of my ways. When I lied, you were still waiting. When I cheated and took what was not meant for me, You were still waiting. When I committed unimaginable sin, You were still waiting. Patiently waiting for me to turn to You, the Love of my life, the Pillar that holds my life together.

I still remember that faithful day. It started like any other, but little did I know what lay in wait for me. I remember my walk on the bridge, leisurely strolling to the job You’d so graciously provided me with.  Then You reached out to touch me, to tug at my heart strings. When You flooded me with the awareness of You, the magnificent You. I burst into tears; I didn't know what to say. I felt so ashamed. All the things I’d done. The ways I’d hurt You and thrown Your love for me back in Your face.

What kind of love is this? It was I that went away. I who rejected Your ways. Yet for over 8 years You waited for me. Patiently waited for me to accept the love You so freely give. And on that day I came to you, so aware of what I’d done, it was You who wiped my tears whispered it’d be alright.

Even now, when I fall. When I do things I should know better than doing, You patiently correct me. With steady perseverance You graciously direct me. You are determined to make our relationship work; You don’t deal or correct me in anger but with this awesome love of Yours.

There’s nothing I've done, am doing or could ever do to deserve this unconditional love of Yours

*Sigh*
Yours affectionately

She's Worth it

“She’s worth it”..... those were the words my boss used to describe the ridiculous amount of money he just spent on an engagement ring (and that was after the 25% discount he got). I can tell you that I blushed on ‘her’ behalf- those are the words any girl would want to be described as by her significant other.

The conversation i had with him reminded me that even though we can be ‘worth it’ to someone today and ‘worthless’ to that same person tomorrow, our worth in God’s eyes NEVER changes. You and I are worth the life of His ONLY Son- we are worth the beating, the pain and suffering He endured.

The amazing thing is that we were worth all that even when we were at our worst- deep in our sin.

If we are ‘worth it’ to God at all times, then we are worth it period!

Regardless of how that boss, that friend, that boyfriend, that husband....whoever it is makes you feel you are worth, remember that God says you ARE  ‘worth it’. If He says it then it MUST be true, because He gave the life of His Son for you.

Congratulations to my boss and his brand new wife to be.

We're almost there....don't give up now

How time flies. I still remember January 01 2012, and now it’s December 03 2012. Praise God!!! When i think about how far He’s brought me, how different the girl who sits here typing is from the girl who saw January 1st, i really can’t help but praise Him. The year started off slow, but in the blink of an eye went into overdrive towards the middle of the year, like it was trying to make up for my slacking off in its first few months – and now its December, the month of fruition.

A lot of us started the year with promises and prophesies, and those that didn’t picked them up as the months rolled by. Whichever category you fall into, you are now at the final stretch and your thoughts are probably running wild either because of impatience or because it doesn’t look like anything is going to happen anytime soon - Will He? When will He? How will He? For many of us this is indeed the 9th month. We’ve been nursing our promises so far and are just about ready to give birth. I’d like to encourage you not to lose hope at this final lap. Oh the enemy will try, but remember that you are more than a conqueror. DO NOT let him steal your victory.

This devotional from “Power to change” encouraged me; I hope it does the same for you too.

The Ninth Month

“And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, O favored one [endued with grace]! The Lord is with you! Blessed (favored of God) are you before all other women!’” (Luke 1:28, The Amplified Bible)

Several theologians refer to something called our “baptized imaginations”. Simply put, it is described as allowing God’s Spirit to enliven the way we think about truth. There is no doubt that we believe in the virgin birth of Christ. But when we encourage our “baptized imaginations” to dwell on the realities of Mary’s pregnancy, we can imagine her ninth month of pregnancy.

Although called a “favored one,” Mary did not escape the difficulties of that month. Women who have experienced pregnancy know that physical exhaustion is a certainty in that final month. While going to the grocery store is difficult for modern women, think what it was like to carry water from the well in a stone jar. Backaches become 24-hour ordeals. One website encourages women to pamper themselves during this month. That was not culturally possible or practically available for Mary.

So how did she do it? And what can we learn from her? The most obvious answer is found in Mary’s response to Gabriel’s astonishing announcement: “Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said.” (Luke 1:38) In his Message paraphrase, Eugene Peterson writes it thus: “I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve. ?Let it be with me just as you say.”

Whether men or women, we all go through “ninth months.” Sometimes they are physical, but more often they are spiritual or emotional. We suspect that something good is coming, but it hasn’t arrived. We may wonder how God will accomplish His will, but we cling to His promises.

Let this be our daily prayer through ninth month experiences, “Lord, I am yours. I am ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say. Amen.”

Never Ever!

Hebrews 13:5b 'because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

I caught the last few minutes of Focus on the family on my way to work yesterday, and boy I’m sure glad I did! The guest speaker was Pastor Brady Boyd who is a senior pastor at New life church. He shared a very powerful story about being bullied as a kid. It all began when he was asked to replace an older boy in the high school baseball team (who was kicked off for unruly behaviour). Pastor Brady’s team mates must have been unhappy with that so they decided to ‘teach him a lesson’. One day after practice, when the coach was nowhere in sight, his team mates grabbed him, tied his hands, tied a rope round his neck and dragged him around the baseball field. By the time they let him go you can only imagine how bruised and bleeding his neck was.

He described his dad as a ‘big guy’ who had taught him to defend himself, but he felt powerless to do so in the situation he found himself in. He mentioned being overcome by shame for his inability to defend himself, so attempted to hide the bruises from his family. Luckily his brother saw it and reported the incident to his father, who promptly asked for an explanation. His father told him not to go to school the following morning that he would go instead. Later the next day his father came home and informed him that he could go to school. Pastor Brady said he was never ever bullied again and everybody (including teachers) was extra nice to him till he graduated. He said he never found out what his father said or did that resulted in such a drastic change, but from that day on he felt like his father was ALWAYS with him. That statement absolutely blew my mind! If he can feel that way about his father who did that one thing for him, then what about God who does much more for us each and every day?

The bible tells us in Isaiah 49:15-16 [And the Lord answered] Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, they may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands; [O Zion] your walls are continually before Me, that God is willing and able to do much more for us than those who claim to love us most.

The bible is full of promises from God about Him NEVER EVER leaving us.

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Joshua 1:5 “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

1Chronicles 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.

Matthew 28:20 ”and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

So why do we feel lonely? Why do we feel abandoned? If Pastor Brady could always feel the presence of an absent father then why can’t we feel the presence of God who IS ALWAYS with us? Do we even believe God when He says He is ALWAYS with us?

I think as humans we automatically assume that God always being with us means that we will never suffer or have to go through trying times- but that’s not the case. Isaiah 43:3 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you” tells us that Gods presence is a guarantee that when we go through these trials we will come out victorious and not a guarantee that we will not go through trials.

He is always there, you may not see or feel Him- but just believe that He is there, because He is.

A friend loves at all times.

So you know how I hardly delete emails? Well the poem I’ve written below was one I sent someone in 2010 (or was it 2011?). I found it a few weeks ago while organising my inbox and it got me thinking about friends and friendship. I decided then that I’d write a post about friendship at some point, and today presented a wonderful opportunity. As is our custom, my colleagues and I had a heated conversation during lunch about....yes you guessed it “Friendship”.

The conversation centred on what you wouldn’t do around your spouse and it got me thinking about the concept of your spouse as your best friend. A concept I realise that a lot of people do not fully understand. I do not claim to fully understand it either and maybe I’m being idealistic about believing that I should be able to share everything with my spouse and he should be able to share everything with me. If my spouse is my best friend, then there shouldn’t be another person on earth that is privy to information or knows a side of me that he doesn’t, and I expect it to be the same for him as well. I realise that this might be the ideal situation, but it’s not always the case especially when you are not unconditionally accepted by your spouse. I read an article a few weeks ago that stated unconditional acceptance as one of the 5 traits of a true Christian friend, and quoted Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” as the scripture reference. In the absence of unconditional acceptance I find that people are not as relaxed and as open as they should be for fear of rejection.

During the conversation, a colleague made a statement that’s still ringing in my head, she said ‘you chose to be or stop being a friend’. That statement came at a time when I’m learning that all of life is based on choice- you chose to react a certain way to situations within or beyond your control, and friendship is no exception. You chose to be a friend and you chose to stop being a friend.

They say some people come into our lives for a season and others for a reason, but our spouses are not one of the season type people. Friendships do not build and maintain themselves, like everything else they require effort from us. Is your friendship with your spouse a priority to you, or are you investing more in friendships with your guys or your girls?

To my husband, “My brother, my best friend, we’ll be friends forever not because of chance, but because we chose to be everyday of our lives” and to all my friends “Though you do not compare to the love of my life, I am grateful to God for you - you are loved and deeply cherished, I chose you too”

 Oh, the comfort
The inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person,
Having neither to weigh thoughts,
Nor measure words- but pouring them
All right out- just as they are
Chaff and grain together
Certain that a faithful hand will take a sift them
Keep what is worth keeping
And with the breath of kindness
Blow the rest away

Just like the Dead Sea?

A dear friend once told me during a very difficult period in my life that my area of trials is my area of ministry- words which God has proven to be very true over the last few months. More than using our experiences to build others up, God also uses those experiences to build us up. Last week Monday and Friday, I had a series of conversations with a young lady about similar trials we are currently facing. She seemed really down so I attempted to encourage her from my reserve tank of hope, even though I wasn’t feeling too peachy. At the end of the conversation, not only was her spirit lifted, but mine was tremendously lifted as well.

I’d given, but God had replenished more than what I’d given, by using the words He spoke through me to remind me of His faithfulness. I could have wallowed in self pity and we could both have had ourselves a nice pity party talking about how depressed we felt, but instead we both left that conversation with strengthened faith and a renewed sense of hope and trust in what God had said about our various situations.

I’d searched for inspiration to write a story that aptly illustrates the point I’m trying to make, but God felt that something more real would get the point across, so He suggested using the Dead Sea to illustrate my point.

The Dead Sea is one of the most salty bodies of water. The reason for the saltiness is that the Dead Sea has one main body of water flowing into it, and is landlocked on every other side – meaning the water has nowhere to go once it arrives at the Dead Sea. The only way water can leave is through evaporation, but as the water evaporates, the salt that was in the water stays behind, adding to the already enormous amount of salt in the water.

This saltiness is also the reason the sea does not support life. The high salt content causes osmosis to occur, literally drawing water (life) out of fish, thus killing it.

Humans can float very easily in the Dead Sea; however swimming is a different matter. It’s easier to swim in a swimming pool or even the ocean than it is to swim in the Dead Sea. This is because the salt content in the water makes it much heavier than any other body of water on Earth. This heaviness pushes anything that enters it up to the surface, making deep sea diving impossible– the water is just too heavy.

The Dead Sea may not be able to survive for very much longer, because the sea is simply not getting the same amount of water it used to. This is because people have built pipelines that have redirected the water that would once flow to the Dead Sea from the Jordan River; the body of water that gives the Dead Sea most of its water, and forced it to go to other areas.

How does this apply to us as individuals?
Look at yourself as a sea that gets “poured” into. God expects what He has poured into us to flow out in a manner that blesses others, which could be through our testimonies, words of encouragement, acts of kindness, generosity and show of love, e.t.c.

The default nature of man is “self concern”, with our default language being “I, me, my”. We seek to first be loved before we love. To first be made happy before we make someone else happy. To first be encouraged before we encourage. To first be fulfilled before we fulfil someone else. We want God to do something first before we praise Him. If proper care is not taken, we become like the Dead Sea that keeps taking (both from God and from individuals) without giving out.

God intends for us to be blessings to everyone else. Using my experience again as an example, I could very well have refused to encourage the lady I had the conversation with because I wasn’t in a great place either. I could have had the mindset that how about she encourage me first or maybe waited for someone else to come and make me feel better before I attempted to make her feel better, but somehow I know that if that’s what I had done I wouldn’t have felt as lifted as I did. There was a sense of fulfilment that came from positively impacting someone else’s life as well as the fact that the words that God spoke to her through me reminded me of God’s faithfulness in my life.

How does this apply to marriage/ relationships?

Suzy complains that her husband doesn’t love her and she is unhappy in their marriage. She believes that if only he does this and that for her or changes in this way and that way to suit her needs, then she’d be happy. And so he does - He made the changes she demanded and started doing all she requested, but she still wasn’t happy, neither was she satisfied. Why? Well because:

1. Self Concern (Selfishness and self centeredness)
She cannot be happy in a relationship where the other party isn’t happy? Love by definition is selfless. Like the Dead Sea that sucks the water out of fish, love cannot thrive in a relationship where the life is being sucked out of her partner by her taking and demanding, then taking some more- without giving anything in return.

2. Toxic emotions
Just as the Dead Sea cannot sustain life due to its high salt content, love cannot thrive in an environment where there is a high concentration of toxic emotions like anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, discrimination, e.t.c?

And just as the saltiness of the Dead Sea does not allow deep sea diving, these toxic emotions do now allow for ‘deep’ intimacy within a relationship.

The Consequences?

If this pattern of selfishness and self centeredness is allowed to continue, then like the Dead Sea it will get to the point where nothing is ‘poured’ into you because nothing is coming out of you. Pipes will be built to divert the “water” – love, happiness, fulfilment, prosperity e.t.c to more fruitful/ profitable/ beneficial “Seas”.

God is not wasteful, if you are not “pouring out”, He just might use someone else who will.
